Long Overdue Post

After 38 years of training my health has deteriorated drastically. I am referring all of my training horses to Eric Olson of Reynolds, ND cell #970-376-4126 His Website is olsonhorses.com He does a great job, Round Penning, Exposing them to things including cattle and roping if that is your desire, Trail Riding. I watched him work with a 3 year old at a Ken McNabb clinic last spring and was very Impressed !! I guess my best testament is that I am sending mine to him for training.

Taylor you are still more than welcome to come put rides on my horses that need it, there just won't be training horses to ride.

Cassandra and Clarinda hope I will still be seening you.

"Hoot", "Sister", "Flag" and Kadilac are for sale it is just too many for me to handle.

I wish to thank my wonderful clients over the years, I will miss you all and to my riding lesson kids you were always a joy and it was wonderful to see you grow in your horsemanship. Feel free to stop by anytime, I rarely leave home anymore.

Still Chasing Dreams Gelding ~For Sale~

Still Chasing Dreams is a 6 year old Registered Quarter Horse gelding. He is a great Grandson of ZanParr Bar. He is an extremely pretty mover and would easily go Western or English. Yet with his bloodlines he should also excell at roping or almost any other event. He was started as a two year old and rode as a three year old, but not finished by any means. I am like the mechanic who's own vehicles don't get work done, or the carpenter or the cobbler.....I just don't get time to work with my own when I am working with the outside training horses. This is Choco he is 5-6 years old started as a two year old then never rode or finished. I made the mistake of turning him and Red out into my outdoor arena when they first came. Big Mistake it took four people over an hour to catch them. After some round pen work that is much improved. He had real head issues and was hard to bridle. Then once bridled gaped at the mouth and chomped and chewed so he spent a couple nights eating, drinking and sleeping with it on. Big improvement as far as that went. At first I was waiting at least 10 minutes for the slightest give, but you can see he is giving his head softly now. His trot is getting better, but he is still not broke at the poll. His main goals for this week are to get even softer in his gives, learn to break at the poll and get more consistant at the trot.

Red

This is Red on his second week.
He is 5 or 6 years old and was started as a youngster then not rode. The first big trick was to catch him and that has improved tremendously. Next was the bridling and we are still seriously working on that. He would gape and chomp on the snaffle like I have never seen before once you get it on so I did something I haven't done in years. He ended up wearing it to eat, drink and sleep for a couple days in his box stall. That has fixed the gaping and chomping we are still having the battle to get the bridle on. Once it is on the gives have improved tremendously. At the start you could wait 15-20 minutes for the slightest give. Now he is giving softly. We need lots of work on whoa and backing, but I think it is all starting to click for him now. This week we will be working hard on the bridling issue, whoa and back. He has already come such a long way.

This is my Granddaughter Karlee Jo she was visiting Grandma while her mommy was riding Money. She will be two in September. Cooper was here as well he will be three in September, but he was moving too fast for Grandma to get a good picture of him. (they are all blurry) They are both a joy to have around but wear me right out.

This is Taylor, she is thirteen and was in town visiting her grandparents. Taylor lives in Minneapolis. She was looking for some horses to ride. Boy did she hit the Jackpot here at Believe in Dreams Ranch. She came about 3 hours a day for the week. She is a great little rider even though her experience has been lessons on Western Pleasure Horses. Going fast was a new experience for her and the work involved with a green horse was an experience as well. She rode everything on the place from old broke lesson horses to ranch owned horses that hadn't been ridden in a long while. She also put some miles on a couple of the horses in for training. She fought long battles with one of the training horses that is lazy and doesn't want to lope with several wimpy little I don't want to lope bucks and hung in like a trooper.
We enjoyed having you Taylor, I hope you enjoyed it too. You are always welcome here and my offer of an apprenticeship next summer still stands.

Kendra on KWS Flash Cadilac~~ Big Money

This is Kendra on KWS Flash Cadilac.........Barn Name Big Money.......We won't mention any of the other names at this point. This is my North Dakota 50/50 Futurity colt for this year. Yes, he is in a growth spurt right now his withers are 15-3 but his butt is 16 hands as a two year old. I am hoping he levels out before the futurity the end of October. I started him in March of this year. Took him to the Ken McNabb clinic in Bismarck in April. I had a couple wrecks with him. I have decided at my age I don't bounce anymore I get hurt. So my darling daughter (who I taught everything she knows) laffs Has agreed to ride him for me. Bless her heart. Ahhh to be young again.
He is doing well, his trot is coming along, he has a really nice lope, is two tracking and side passing, rollbacks, pivots and 360's. I have three training horses to finish up then I think Money will be coming home in September when Kendra is busy with harvest. I just want to thank You Kendra for all the work you are doing with him. Love you !!

This is the Tennessee walker we have in for training this month. I nicknamed him Sunny. Not sure what his name is. Hes really sweet and learning quickly. I am just working on his head tossing right now. He seems to do a lot better in the outdoor arena. We tried to lope for the first time when these pictures were taken and got a few strides but hes still a little uncoordinated.

Spring has Sprung, even if it hasn't

In celebration of May 1st or because maybe it is finally the end of the "never ending winter" We are going to kick off our season by taking in the first of the training horses this weekend.
We have promised ourselves this season for sure, we are only taking two horses per month each. If your name isn't on the waiting list, be sure to call and make your reservation soon.

Myah and I will be attending Ken McNabb's three day clinic May 21st-23rd in Bismarck if you would like information on attending just send an email or give me a call, I would be glad to pass that on to you.

We will be attending some shows this summer, but mainly we are getting two year olds ready for the ND 50/50 futurity in the fall.

You rarely see me rambling away on the blog anymore, Myah has pretty much taken it over for me. She is doing a wonderful job too ! If you haven't gotten a chance to meet her yet that is a good reason to stop on by for a visit.

Above is Nippers, a 5yr old dapple grey gelding, and Sport, a 3yr old grey mare. Nippers had been here previously as a yearling for ground work so he turned out to be the easy one to work with. However, Sport wasn't halter broke when she arrived so she was more of a challenge. They both worked well in the round pen and continued to do well in the arena. Sport tried to pull a fast one on Kacey the first day out in the arena but soon realized she couldnt win that battle. Go here for more pictures.
To the left is Roy, a bay 8yr old gelding, and a 10yr old grulla mare. Roy liked to buck when asked to do more than a trot and the mare was just lazy and needed to learn to neck rein. Roy counldn't manage to buck Kacey off even though he was a huge horse and the mare was as sweet as could be. When they got here they were pretty fat but shaped up by the end of the month. They were both easy to work with and turned out nice. Heres a link to their pictures.

This is Precious, she is eight or nine years old and here to learn some manners. She also came April 25th. We have had our moments in the round pen her and I. Now she is the nicest horse to work in the round pen.

She is really smart, but not very willing at times yet.
We have been making lots of progress though.

This is Gypsy a two year old that came to be started on April 25th.

This is the first time I got on her right after she got here. She was a challenge in the round pen as they sometimes are when they are "pets" I had a hard time getting any movement and of course she took a few pokes at me.

The later pictures are in the outdoor arena mostly just getting her to move out for me and to make sure she was giving softly. We are out in the fields now riding so it is hard to get pictures.

What a beautiful day outside today. Gotta love that sunshine......

I finished the barn chores and came inside to eat and relax, looked out the picture window and Kacey was in the outdoor arena riding "Flash" I went out and saddled up "Cookie" Kacey had saddled him one day last week so I put the bridle on and got on. My own horses never get all the ground work the training horses do. It seems like one day I just saddle them up, get on and ride off. I got on and he was fine with that so I started working on "giving" We did wander around, but getting him to give each direction was our objective for the day.

I spent maybe an hour with "Cookie" then put him away and went and got "Flag" He saddled up like an old pro, bridled up real nice. He fussed with the bit for awhile. I stepped up once, got down then just got on and rode around. Kacey was riding "Rockstar" We just walked for today everyone was real relaxed and it went well. When I got off of "Flag" Kacey trotted "Rockstar" I know he feels smooth as I have been working with him, but it is nice to watch someone ride you can really see how nice of a trot he has.

I am so enjoying getting the chance to ride my own horses. I think I had almost forgotten what it feels like. No pressure to have them at a certain point, just take my time. I am not taking very many training horses this summer so I can get mine ready and go to some Horse Shows.
I also made sixty days of training such a bargain I am hoping to be able to do more "finishing" than just colt starting. I want to be able to take them up to the hills by Walhalla this summer too. That is a great place to ride and is really good for the horses.

All the horses are really shedding right now so I will wait until they look better to post pictures.

Hope it is warm and sunny where you are too and that you got a chance to enjoy your horses like I did this weekend

Spring is Springing

Finally spring seems just around the corner.
Holy Cow ! I had no idea it has been so long since I posted.
We are gearing up for the training horses. Barn is all cleaned out after the long winter.
Kacey did most of it this year all 53 loads. We are still doing it all by hand
it is just too hard to push that wheelbarrow through the snow.
The outdoor arena needs lot's of work and the pens alongside the barn need to be
cleaned yet. waiting for that to thaw.

Hope everyone fared the winter better than I did. I went into hibernation mode and didn't keep in touch with anyone.

There is already a waiting list for this year and I will not be taking as many as I plan on taking in some horse shows with my own this year. Kacey and I both have 50/50 yearlings and would like to get them out and going. I would also like to take "Rockstar" to a few Paint shows.

Kacey will be helping again this year. We will be taking colts to start. I would like to go to a 60 day minimum on the colts ( we definitely require 60 days for beginning riders.) for more experienced riders we may still do the 30 days. We will still be taking problem horses (however there will be a 30 day minimum for problem horses this year.) I have tried to do them in a shorter time, I am just not satisfied with the results on some of them. I had some tuff ones last year and was expected to do more with them than possible in a shorter time. Riding lessons are still available as well.

Welcome "Karlee Jo"

Karlee Jo was born this morning she weighs 7.5# and is 19"

Mom and baby are both doing well. Kendra isn't quite perked up after the anesthesia and is still numb from the block and is already talking about having one or two more. ~laffin~

Cooper's 1st birthday party is scheduled for the 30th. Kendra has the invitations mailed and everything ready. Lets see with a C-section she won't get out of the hospital until Sunday. Can we say Brave ?

Karlee hasn't had her first bath in these pictures so it is hard to tell what color her hair will be.

Grandma got to give Karlee her first bottle and hold her lots this morning. Call me content.....

Kacey on Ringo

This is Kacey on Ringo one of the new horses in. This horse wants to be on the move all of the time. Kacey has him standing still now for mounting and dismounting, pretty good for Ringo anyway. When it comes to movement it is from a standstill to a really fast trot kind of "scooting" around. I am not complaining that Kacey is working these two. ~grinz~ It is sure nice to have help.
I am still working on my photography skills when they are moving. ~laffs~

Ta Dah ! Kacey has been riding Rockstar to get him ready for the futurity. Of course I have been too busy to get to him. Which I said I was not going to let happen. Kacey decided he was going to ride at the 50/50 and one day he just came down to the arena and pretty much just got on. So here they are. I might be a little prejudiced, but I think they look just awesome ! I think this is ride number 4. You should see the sweet trot he has nice and soft reins were just hanging. Now if I was just a better photographer. Oh well I was sneaky to get this shot. ~winks~

Drifter

This is Drifter. He has some "issues" I just can't call him a problem horse ~laffs~ His owner Donna even wrote out a list for me. I think from now on this will be a requirement for all problem horses.

I really thought it was a great idea and appreciated it !! Thank You Donna.

1. difficulty saddling
2. turns butt at you when trying to catch him in corral
3. will not permit his mane to be roached or bridle path trimmed with electric trimmers.
4. does not lope slowly, trots super fast then gallops and holds head to side to go his own way.
That is exactly the list she gave me, but since we had agreed on only ground work she said I did not have to fix the riding problem. This horse is only here for a week. She also assures me the horse has never kicked or bucked.
So on Sunday I put him in the round pen. Well Chuck goes to Drifter's pen to get him for me and he doesn't turn his butt just keeps turning his head away to avoid the halter. I work him in the round pen and the one thing I remember right away is fat horses are easy. He is just trotting and is winded right away and looking at me, what do you want ? ~laffs~ I worked on the basics inside and outside turns and he wants to come in to me right away so I worked on having him walk beside me. Did some work on the halter on and off. He seemed spooky of things so I did some sacking out with the saddle pad and other things. I worked on him staying in his space and sending him off and having him come up to me. I really had no problems with him.
On Monday I go in his pen to get him and he turns his butt to me...so I cluck trying to get him to face me and he backs toward me threatening me. I smacked him with the lead rope. Well then he turned enough that I could get the halter on. Not facing me kinda side ways with his ears back. Hmmmmm
I take him to the arena and put him in the round pen. Well I worked him on his turns and he seems okay. I work on the saddle pad he seems okay. So I get my saddle and he isn't going to have anything to do with that. I set it down in the middle of the round pen and I go to send him off, for some reason I had a lead rope in my hand I have no clue why. Rather than picking up my whip I kind of twirled that to send him off and he turned his butt and started backing up at me. About then I realize I have backed into my saddle and he lets fly with both hind feet just missing my head. So I picked up my whip and needless to say everytime he turns his butt he gets worked. He is determined, but then so am I. It finally came down to everytime he turned his butt in to me he got smacked with the whip and I hate to do that. Chuck went in for awhile, he can be meaner than I can. They went the rounds. Then I went back in and he did it a few more times. Finally he quit turning his butt in and eventually was turning in then coming in. When he was ready to stand I sacked him out again. I can't throw my 40+ pound saddle up on this guy so Chuck came back in. At first it was try send him off, try send him off. Then he finally stood while he threw it on and took it off two times each side. We didn't drop any cinches or anything at this point.
I worked more with the saddle pad and just putzed around with him after that rubbing him down and walking around with him. He seems real dominant, but he wants to be nice.
On Tuesday he was like a different horse all together. I walked right up to him in his pen and put the halter on. Took him to the arena and sacked him out. That went so well I got one of the youth saddles and brought it out at first he started to walk away so I bent to get the whip and he walked right back like oops. I threw the saddle on and off about twenty times from each side and that horse never moved an inch. (So that is the picture.) I had to make him move to take it. Still not cinched up though that is a 36" cinch and it still wouldn't reach he got all fussy about it. I did cinch him up with my bareback pad until he got over it. I am going to have to figure something out.

Skip to Saturday.... now He is fine when you walk into the pen to get him hugs the gate and puts his nose right into the halter. You can take him right to the round pen now. Sometimes you can turn him loose and he will stand rock solid and let you saddle him and others he will trot a couple times around then come to you. He may even leave once or twice before he will stand. So he hasn't got this solid yet. I am sure if you tied him at this point or even hooked a lead rope on and looped it over your shoulder he would be just fine. I want him to stand loose, like all the colts I do. Poor guy he never knows who or when someone will come get him from his pen and take him to the round pen and saddle him up. I had worked with him almost two hours on Thursday and later on Kacey went and got him and saddled him up. There are many times I wish they could talk to me and tell me what they are thinking. Drifter's probably thinking don't they ever give a guy any rest around here ?

He is getting over being terrified of spray bottles. I think I am on my third spray bottle filled with water now. He has made many circles of the round pen over me spraying water. Tonight he finally let me get his neck wet. Plus Chuck spent some time with him and got him wet clear up near his ears and was able to spray it right in front of his face for awhile....

I gave Donna his owner his progress report and it sounds like we came to the conclusion that Drifter will be staying another week.

Pat riding Whiskey

This is Pat riding his horse Whiskey. This is a 4 year old rescue horse that I am starting for him. It is at about 30 days. This is Pat's 2nd ride on him and actually his 3rd ride on a horse. He had ridden once in his life on a nose to tail trail ride. Pat looks real comfortable in the saddle and is doing a great job with Whiskey so far. Learning the reins is going better if I just visit rather than try to give details like slide your hands down the reins to turn. That will all come in time and he does way better and is way more comfortable if I let him do it naturally. Anyway Pat says he is having a blast riding Whiskey and is ready for me to bring him home and pick up the other two.

I love when that happens. It is so fun to watch someone having that much fun on their horse too.

Connie finally drug me off to a Horse Show

Connie finally talked me into going to a Horse Show. So we loaded up Wardrum, Goldie and Rockstar and went to the North Dakota State Horse Show Association Final Show in Fessenden. Kacey even came with us. He ended up being gate man for the day. Boy if that didn't bring back memories.

Connie took Wardrum in Stallions and Geldings in Halter which is a huge class. He did even trot for her, she had just started working on that this week. We didn't get all the stains out she had just started working on that too. Those are my fault and I am probably going to have to clip him I hadn't worried about them because I wasn't getting to my own futurity colt let alone to him. Now that she has bought him and is showing in the futurity it is a whole new ball game. They are clicking together so well.

Connie also took her two year old filly Goldie in Mares at Halter. She is a beautiful Palomino that is just a sweetheart to ride.

All of them did well for their first time at a show. Stood tied to the trailer well. That was what we were looking for.

Heck of a Wreck

Well I had a did have a wreck with Jasmine. I was only getting off. I believe I almost had both feet on the ground when she bolted. I don't even have a clue what it was about. I do know she took out my whole right arm, my hip and my knee. In this business, even just riding horseback one can still get hurt when you least expect it. I have been bucked off and gotten hurt a lot less than this. I was able to keep on riding, but still it slowed me down for awhile. I think the lump on my hip and the bump on my knee even more than the arm. This was July 26th and I am still healing up the last marks on my arm are healing up, the bump on my knee is just about gone and well the lump on my hip may just be awhile yet. So even if you think you can't get hurt, please be careful. May all of your rides be safe ones...........

Updates on the Horses

I know these pictures are blurry I apologize. Finding someone around here to take a picture is near impossible, not to mention I hate having my picture taken. That is one thing I loved about having the summer camp kids . They were all great for taking photos of on my training horses. ~laffs~ Anyway here is Jasmine. She is doing great. She stands rock solid now for saddling, untied. I can throw my heavy saddle up there like an old broke horse and she doesn't flinch. I don't lunge her or round pen her or anything just put my foot in the stirrup and ride off.

The weather hasn't been cooperating with me at all I am going to have to take all the panels down in the arena. None of the horses need them anymore. The first couple of weeks all it did was rain and I mean pouring rain. Now it has been up in the 90's. I have been riding late evenings, late enough that the mosquito's are bad and I need the lights in the arena. I wouldn't ride my own horses in the heat and the humidity so I don't with the clients horses either.

Max is about at the same stage as Jasmine. He is still needing more work on gives to the bit. He has the longest tongue I have ever seen on a horse. If he doesn't want to give to the bit he reaches his tongue out all the way to the buckles on my reins. It is the goofiest thing I have ever seen. His movement is pretty good and he gives when he wants to. You have to be persistent I expect alot more from him. We really need to get outside. Hopefully tomorrow and the next few days a few long trail rides will make a world of difference.

Boomer is coming right along as well. Saddles up nice. He is having his moments with giving too, but I am working on it. Yes, we are working on learning to bow. I am trying to think of another cue so if you think of something different that isn't going to give the farrier fits please call and let me know you guys. ~grinz~

Jasmine's Progress

I will be the first to admit Jasmine has been a real challenge for me so far. She is a wonderful horse. Smart, personable and friendly, but there was a mishap where she got scared or something when her owner was starting her. She threw her leg over the saddle and Jasmine bolted or bucked or both and her owner ended up with a concussion. For over a week now I have been working just to lift my leg on the left hand side. I can get it on the right hand side (I always try to do everything equal on both sides) I can even put weight in the right stirrup and start to step up. On the left I have tried just about everything I know. I have spent time just lifting my foot starting with inches to get to the point where the top of my foot can touch the bottom of the stirrup. She is spook proofed so that is not it. You can swing things all over and above her. Then I decided to lay her down. So far I have her bowing the next stage will be actually laying her down. I seemed to have gained some confidence with this work as you will see in the bottom picture as finally I am able to step up on the left. I am so hoping this holds and progress will continue from here. This foundation is so important.

Max's Progress

Finding a photographer around here is near impossible and it is usually when you are dirty, sweaty and worn out, but here goes. This is just an update on Max. I have spent some extra time saddling and unsaddling him. He had an "incident" prior to coming here with saddling so was a little leary. I noticed it more with unsaddling. He is much improved now, but still not standing perfectly still while loose like I like them. I will keep on working on it. I have been stepping up in the stirrups and that has gone well. He has been way more upset about the bit in his mouth than anything.

Max

This is Max, we will call him the Wonder horse for now. He is another 3 year old owned by the "Trottier" family and here to be started. I think even he "wonders" what he is up to. While we were outside taking "arrival" pictures of his partner Jasmine, we heard this loud Crash in the barn and this is what we rushed in to find. Luckily Max remained calm and cool throughout and was just hanging around. First I came up with the great plan of putting the Rubbermaid water tank under his back feet to try and give him a little leverage to help him the rest of the way over the stall. He got one of his hind legs over. He was totally and completely stuck then. Like I said. We were fortunate he was calm about this. Had he decided to get upset and freak out he would have really banged himself up. Chuck quite unhappily did about the only thing you can do at this point. Got his saw and cut the stall down around the horse. In all the years of owning and training horses this was the second time he has had to do this. Believe me when I say he still isn't happy about the first time which was just a couple years ago. Max didn't flinch a bit while the power saw cut through the boards. In fact it was hard to make him help to get out of the predicament he was in. He finally did some sort of nose dive cutting a little chunk out of his lip somehow. He had some minor rubbing to his inner I guess you might call it his flank area ? and a small scrape on his right hind. When I first saw him hanging there I was certain it was going to be a big wreck, considering what it could of been I think Max came through with flying colors.

This little escapade had however used up my training time for the evening by the time it was all cleaned up and he was all checked over.

The next day I used my chiropractic school skills ~grinz~ checked him all over. He was out in the hip area this seemed to have been something that was long term not just from his stall adventure. Once I got it back into place he was backing around following me, bumping me with his butt like, ooooh that feels so good do it some more.

I did some round pen work. Mostly outside and inside turns. It appears someone has done this work with him before. I am not certain if the owner mentioned that. It is not extensive, meaning he doesn't want to come in to me right away or seem to know what it is about for sure. His attitude is coming around. So far so good.

This is "Boomer" he is a 3 year old and belongs to the Rott family. He is also a son of my stallion "Karmas Kadilac" I may be a tad partial, but I think he is fine looking. He definitely has Kadilac's temperament. Jim called and asked if I would take the horse in for training. Well, first he asked if I wanted to buy him, but lets skip all of that. I agreed to take him in for training. Jim said, "You are going to be mad, he isn't even halter broke." I could only laugh. Jim has sent horses here for training before, two of them even, he knows better. We all get too busy sometimes. He put a halter on him, loaded him up in the horse trailer and brought him that very same day. We unloaded him, led him into the barn and into a stall. This horse hadn't been in a barn or stall before either on top of everything else that was new for the day. I am putting it all towards the great temperament of my stallion at this point. ~winks~ At first leading him back and forth to the arena was a bit of an adventure I will admit. Considering him as a three year old that isn't halter broke. This boy is a champ !

When it Rains it Pours

Well it may officially be spring if we don't all float away. The outdoor arena is looking alot like a lake. Kacey went out and trenched for drainage, bless his heart. He also got the yard mowed between rains before we had to wait and hay it. The fencing on the neighboring 20 acres is almost completed. The three two year olds have been gelded. Oh and all of you will love this for sure. The bumpy, pothole driveway that you have all been sure your horsetrailers would disappear in some day ? Well not only has it been bladed, but yes gravel has been hauled in. ~Laffs~ If it will quit raining for a few minutes it can get packed in good. Think that about covers this short update for now. Here is too hoping we don't need to build an Ark anytime soon.

My new Grandson ! Chancey comes out of the operating room and he doesn't say the traditional Its a boy ! He bounces out still in scrubs and with this huge grin and announces " Its a Cooper !!"

He was born a couple weeks premature
His full name is Cooper Lee. 6 lbs 7 oz and 18.75 " He does have hair.
Kendra was up and about the next day even after the c-section and has been doing really well.

Isn't he the most beautiful baby you have ever seen yada, yada, blah, blah ........well I hafta do the gramma thing, don't I ?

This colt has been handled daily even if it was only taking him from his boxstall out for the day and back in some days. He is quiet and gentle. Leads well, picks up his feet for the farrier, has been bathed, is used to dogs and trailer loads easily. He has not been gelded yet. I usually monkey with him while he eats his feed and that doesn't bother him so he is pretty easy going.

He has been fed "Front Runner" feed and I do have information receipts for that part of the futurity as well.

Mary and "Snickers"

This is Mary and "Snickers" . Kendra volunteered her horse in our quest to build Mary's confidence. So on July 10th Mary and I went to Kendra's in Bisbee too pick him up. Kendra gave Mary a riding lesson before we loaded so she would know all the ins and outs of riding him........

When Mary came to ride "Snickers" they seemed like they were getting along great ! Mary seemed to really enjoy having a horse that could trot consistently and lope whenever she wanted. There were a few times he loped quite a bit faster than she wanted (usually after too many days off, when he was feeling his oats) It always worked out and they seemed to make a good team.

I think overall it was a good experience for Mary, at least I hope it was.

Thank You so much Kendra for letting Mary use "Snickers" He was well behaved and a treat to have around.

Kendra picked "Snickers" up and took him home on August 20th. She said she didn't know who was happier, "Snickers" to be home or "No Need" to have him home.

Cheyenne's 4-H Achievement Days in New Rockford

Cheyenne did a great job at her 4-H achievement days. She showed "Grace" a two year old with 5 weeks of training and did a super job.

Cheyenne has been a "Believe in Dreams" girl for two years now and doesn't give up easily. She has her own 3 year old "Flash" that she has been riding since he started training here as a 2 year old. She has many hours of riding in on him. However, shortly before her fair he decided to be a real , well lets just say a jerk. (children read this) So deciding it would be safer for everyone she took on the task of learning to ride Grace.

She planned on doing Showmanship and Horsemanship. Which is plenty on a two year old with five weeks of training. We weren't too worried Grace is super quiet and has a great temperament, plus like I already mentioned Cheyenne has been riding Flash through his two and three year old year and as a three year old he has had some supremely difficult moments.

Cheyenne made it through Showmanship and got a Blue Ribbon, placing Fifth. I was as proud as mom was. Showmanship is so hard for the kids no matter how much we practice.

Then it was on to Horsemanship. Except for not wanting to lope she survived. She also got a Blue Ribbon and placed Fifth. Hey not everything can go our way. You kept on trying and that is always a good thing Cheyenne. *grinz* These young horses are tuff to get going even for me.

But then they say to get the premium money you have to ride in Trail. Cheyenne says sure I'll try it. I'm skert for her. Oh well no guts no glory. Well she makes it through the gate and gets it closed. Hey I have the video (that's why no pictures) I think Grace helped with her head and her butt. It was cute. They make it over the walkover, the edge maybe they looked awful scary to Grace *shrugs* . Then the dreadful back thru. They sure did give it a go. Then there was the side pass with the tires. But it was the mailbox. Grace didn't shy from that at all, not even when it tipped over with that huge steel base on it. She was like oh are we done now and just walked on. And another Blue Ribbon. Good For You ! Cheyenne I do admire your determination. That took a lot of determination and try just to go out there and you did GREAT !!

In fact your whole day was great and I am so proud of You !

And all that Premium Money sure didn't hurt either. I am so happy for you that all of your hard work paid off over the last two years. I keep thinking of you with that great big pitchfork and how small you are ( I won't say what it is usually full of)

Kya's 4-H Achievement Days Horse Show

Kya's 4-H Achievement Days Horse Show *shakes head* well kiddo we made it through......All I can say is I am proud of you !

I left for Mayo Clinic and didn't hear from Kya for two weeks. Then I get I two day notice of her Horse Show. She gets to work with "Grace" a two year old Paint filly with three weeks on her at 9:30 the night before the show to get ready for Showmanship. This filly has a disposition you can not believe and Kya is a trooper so we are hoping it just might work.

Anyway the next morning we bathe and head out only to get a flat on the trailer at six mile bay. Okay, its hot already and here we are on the side of the highway just Kya and I. We have three horses in the trailer. "Hoot" who Kya plans to ride, "Grace" for Showmanship and backup and "Flag" to separate the two because they don't ride together well. So we try to change it by ourselves. Help arrives, someone up above looking out for us for sure. A kind man in a utility truck pulls over, impact tools, compressor the works. Plus another truck with two men. Praise the lord.... We are on the road in minutes. Many thanks to all of you. They would not accept money just accepted our thanks and wished Kya luck.

Next in my hurry I pass the Maddock turn. I cannot back....Yes after all these years of pulling the trailer, I do not even try I am hopeless. But, since we are now running late, much to my embarrassment I try to back down the highway. To make a long story short it does not work. We end up making a U turn on the highway.

We arrive in Maddock as Showmanship is in progress to be met by "Dad" who says hurry and we can make it. It was a bad idea, I knew better. I apologize Kya. I shouldn't have let you try to learn a pattern on the fly on your way into the arena while we "yanked" a two year old out of the trailer. That was my "bad"

So next we get "Hoot" ready for horsemanship and put Kya on to warm up. She barely gets away from the trailer and out into an opening and a young man comes out of no where, totally out of control, almost running into Kya and Hoot. Anyone who knows Hoot is going to find this hard to believe, but he gives two little crow hops and down goes Kya. She popped right up and got back on. Think she scared me more than herself. So I take her way behind the trailer to warm up, a totally different area. Yep, you guessed it. Here comes the same kid totally out of control again headed straight for her. Well that was enough, for both of us. She decides to ride Grace. This was not the original plan. We go in knowing it is going to take alot of work.

So I guess Kya all I am going to say is the chips were all stacked against you and you didn't give up. You know that is all I ask of a "Believe in Dreams girl" you have what it takes to fulfill your dreams. No Matter how hard things may seem at any given time.....Don't give up, dig your heels in and try a lil harder !

These are my 10 year old lesson girls

This is my group of 10 year old girls taken on a day of summer day camp here at Believe in Dreams Ranch. First is Mallory on Chuck's horse "Hoot" Your eyes don't deceive you he is big, over 16 hands. He is Mallorys favorite to ride though. This is her first year joining us here and she has been learning a lot. Sometimes we might go a little fast for her, but she has been a real trooper.

Next we have Cheyenne on her little three year old Appaloosa. She was here last year too. "Flash" has had his moments this year however and has been a test for all of us so far. He definitely has a mind of his own at times and then at others he can be the sweetest thing.

Last but not least we have Kya, another newcomer. She will ride anything up for grabs. On this day she is on my horse "Chief" He is green broke at best and lazy. She is without stirrups for two reasons one she needs the practice and the other we can't figure out how to adjust the darn things on this saddle. If determination and want to are any indication of the goals Kya will reach on a horse, all I can say is look out. This is the one determined little girl.

I visited with Lesley at one of the shows and we were talking about the trail ride/camping trip we took up to neumandahl years ago. I think Twister was three, but you can tell they all were young, just look at Kacey on Dee. Lesley was saying it was the best trail ride ever we took the horses swimming in the river and climbed some steep hills. I still like to do this with the training horses when I can. I have been trying to get the lesson girls up there the last two years and just can never get it planned out.

Lesley on Twister, Kendra on Tonka, Kacey on Dee, I was riding Snuffy and I believe Chuck was riding TJ and was the photographer that day. I am sure there are more pictures around here.

Stump Lake Horse Show

We made it to the first NDSHSA show this year. We didn't clip or bathe. We violated my Showmanship rule and did not participate, but the girls did walk and trot. Mary did a test drive on "Hoot" in barrels and placed 5th. A good time was had by all. They had a good attendence for the first show of the year I might add, it was nice to see.

This is a two year old Thoroughbred, That came this spring to be started to go to the track. Her name is Lil Dee and what a sweetheart.

Mary even rode her just with a bareback pad, so she wouldn't be shocked when they throw a little jockey saddle up on her.

Oh and of course that is my stallion Kadilac peeking in the door wishing she was for him.

So Many Thanks to all those who had me in their thoughts and prayers.

The trip to Mayo Clinic was beyond what we could have hoped for !

The place was amazing, Dr Piepgras was just beyond what anyone could ask for as far as explaining everything to us, totally absolutely wonderful.

The aneurysm is below the "dura" a membrane which lines the brain so if it does burst it will go into my right eye, which will get bloody and swell, but it will not go into my brain. Which is all great news. Dr Piepgras said he was fairly certain exactly where it was. He will still have a formal reading done of the tests, but was not worried about it at all. We asked why all the other surgeons had put us into such a panic and he said he understood that. They do not see aneurysm's everyday like he does. He visited with us for close to two hours went over everything. The aneurysm will need to be checked again in about a year, otherwise I am good to go.

When I came out of there it was like someone poked a pin in me and I deflated from all of the stress I have been under all of this time. Chuck took over driving and I slept like a rock.

I really do want to thank everyone again for keeping me in their prayers and thoughts.

Special thanks go out to my daughter Kendra and her husband Chancey for taking my yearlings and my Shady Lady. It helped so much not to have the young ones to put in and out of the barn honey and you have been there to help me out when I needed you through this big scare. Love You Mom......

More Special thanks to Jim, Marian and Mary Chattin for their chore help and even running out to rescue me when a training horse came in on my way home. You people have been a blessing to us for years too, more than you can know.

Louise and Cheyenne Thank You both for spending time out here and doing chores. It appears Cheyenne made great improvement with Flash and won a big battle with him last night. I am so proud *grinz* you go girl !!

Summer Camp is ON !!

An aneurysm in my head isn't going to slow me down either. Summer camp is on ! Riding lessons are on ! The horse show schedule is out already, we need to be gearing up. Training horses are here. Kacey gets thrown and still makes the Bismarck Tribune

Kacey got thrown Thursday at the Bull-A-Rama in Bismarck.
He said as he was coming off the bull caught him with his one horn under his vest and body slammed him like a wrestler. Some bruising on his arm and shoulder, but thankfully no serious injuries this time.

Even when he gets thrown he makes the paper. Way to go son, I never had that kind of luck.

There have been so many calls with people interested in the Summer Day Camp program I am already overwhelmed. It sounds like it is going be an exciting Summer !

So far the weekly rate of $125.00 is staying the same. (plus board for your horse, if you have your own here.) I am working on some rate options for those interested in perhaps only attending two or three days a week. We had such great fun with the day camp from the end of May until school started last summer.

Plans are in the works for attending some of the Open Horse Shows. I have some lesson girls active in 4-H and I am wondering if we should look at starting our own 4-H club if there is enough interest.

I am also planning on attending some Paint Shows if I can swing it. We have the two 50/50 colts and Cookie. The girls that have worked with the colts would be eligible to show them in Halter, Showmanship, Lungeline and in hand Trail.

I am looking into Believe in Dreams T-Shirts for the girls and also some for us to wear to the Horse Shows while we warm up, before putting on show outfits. Something along the lines of Believe in Dreams Horse Show Team.
Please let me know if there is any interest in these.

I am also working on plans for us to go for a trail ride this summer near Walhalla in the hills and trees. We can take the horses swimming in the river and camp out.

I would like to do a mother/daughter day or even a week and of course we would have to do one for the dads too. I need to know if anyone is interested in this.

Ken McNabb is willing to come up and do a three day clinic with us.
I believe the cost is around $350.00 for each rider and only $20.00 for spectators. I would have to have enough people interested in riding for the three day clinic. He requires a $175.00 deposit for each rider. Please let me know if you are interested so I can decide if I should pick out a date for this and set it up. I am still doing riding lessons this winter, we have had such beautiful weather. These are just on a call ahead basis at $25.00 per hour.

At this point, boots with a riding heel are my only requirement (in the winter we have been using warm boots with a heel) I am considering helmets for all riders. Please parents, let me know your thoughts on this....you too girls.

I have been concentrating most of my time on getting Flag going good, but have Chief going and Odin started. I still need to get to Kadilac.

I have been getting calls and emails about the training horses too, so stay in good shape girls we have lots and lots of riding to do.

This morning I had the great idea to put the colts out into the arena to play.
First WarDrum escapes from me so I get everyone else out in the arena and head out to get the escapee. Next I hear all kinds of clunking and banging. I turn around and cannot see Cookie who had just been at the trough eating hay while the others played. As you can see from the pictures this is how I found him. Ahhhhh the joys of owning youngsters. Luckily Kacey was home, so I went to the house and got him and the camera. We pondered our dilemma Kacey hooked on a couple ropes, but it did not take long to figure out that wasn't going to work. So Kacey gets in my truck and we are going to push the tank over. Well that was enough for Cookie he finally got to his feet and jumped out.
This is my theory what happened, Cookie was standing there eating, minding his own business and Peanut and RockStar were goofing around running. They banged into the poor innocent one and knocked him into the trough where he promptly fell down. He really wasn't too excited about it he was even eating hay while we were trying to figure out what we were going to do.

These three lesson girls are all riding two year olds we trained during the summer. On very short notice the girls wanted to take in a horse show, sooo off we went ! Everyone had a great time. They all went in Showmanship and Horsemanship (my requirement), but they rode in everything else too, from walk trot to barrels and even egg and pickle. LOL Someone forgot eggs so they used pickles, it was cute. Kendra was there too and of course she did well with Spook, and she brought no need. I will try to get a picture of the cute lil guy. Kendra also had Bruiser and Snickers along for speed events.
It goes without saying I was proud of all of them. We went again the following weekend and Lacey joined us.
A few of us got the horseshow bug and plan on attending more next year.

"Hoot" found a buddy

Well Hoot found himself a buddy out in the pasture, it seems him and Kadilac are fast friends. That was probably the last horse I expected him to buddy up with.

It was a beautiful day ! I turned Hoot out into the pasture today where he had his first encounter with my stallion Kadilac. After awhile the whole herd of them were running the pasture. Hoot settled himself in real fast though, a couple hours later he was sharing a bale of alfalfa with Kadilac. For the past few days he has been acting like he owns the place. He was letting himself out of his boxstall to stand out in the yard with Jack. No matter how good of latch is on his stall, He lets himself out. He doesn't make any attempt to wander off though, he just goes into the indoor arena to roll in the sand and returns to the front of the barn to eat with the pony. The first couple of times I caught him loose in the yard he looked at me like I was the wierd one and there should be nothing unusual about finding him out. He is such a character. Hence the name Hoot. I never know what he will do next only that it will probably make me laugh. He is just a hoot.......

This is me teaching Flag to bow and to lay down. It actually took less than an hour. Sorry the pictures are not coming out any better the camera is picking up dust particles in the air.

Okay I am just a little frustrated. Yesterday I taught Flag how to bow down and to lay down on cue. Mary got RimShot bowing down too. We just can't get a picture to work in the indoor arena with my camera.
It was really fun, I was surprised how quickly Flag caught on. It wasn't that long ago and you could not even touch his legs and feet. Then I had to work on him letting me just pick up his feet again. Don't think my farrier would like it if the horse lays down when you pick up his front foot. I was using lifting his front foot as the beginning cue, now I will refine it.

Both girls pretty much did the training themselves.

The gray mare is one that was here for training. She belongs to the Rott family.
The sorrel is Flag.
Anyway I thought it turned out pretty cool !

While taking photos of Chuck and "His" new horse I got to playing around with the options. Came up with a cool effect, It almost looks like someone drew it.

The new horse is an 6 year old Paint. He is about two hairs short of 16 hands. Roan with a big white spot under his belly and two hind stockings. C'mon out and meet him, he is super personable and a real "gentleman" to be around . He is going to be a great lesson horse here at Believe in Dreams.

The last two days I have been monkeying around trying to get good pictures of four colts. They are all in the same pen during the day. Everyone wants to have their nose in my face at the same time. It makes for some real different photo's. I don't have telephoto on the camera and ended up taking about sixty shots. Might have 4 that worked
Peanut was the worst of the bunch and some part of him is in almost every photo

I have been bragging about my "lesson girls" Well this is my son Kacey on the front page of the Grand Forks Herald. I am so proud, as always.

I do think he jinxed himself though saying his only injury was the broken nose. The following weekend at the Western Edge Finals in Dickinson he got smacked in the face by his bull. Took the horn boss right in the mouth. Damaged some teeth and knocked a few loose, not to mention stitches on the inside and outside of his lip.

Its Tuesday now that happened Friday night, He looks a little better today the swelling has gone down some and Rollin has worked on his two front teeth.
Thank You Rollin, so very much. Its for certain we would not have beautiful smiles without you.

In 1997 I attended a three day clinic in Bowman, ND. That just wasn't enough, it only gave me a taste for what could be. That fall I attended my first apprenticeship program at Ken's in Clark, Wyoming. In the spring of 1998 my daughter decided to go, well I just had to tag along and was lucky to get another apprenticeship program under my belt. Truly the experience of a lifetime. Originally when I began to teach Flag the drop your head cue he would leave his head way up high and immediately go to sleep. I mean for long periods of time, showing no inclination to even think about lowering it. Now he finally caught on and usually as you walk towards him if you lift your hand at all he lowers his head and keeps it there. It is really sweet to have him lower it even if you move the hand toward the noseband of his halter. Somehow when it sunk in you do not even have to put your hand on his poll. Don't ask me how he picked up on the wrong portion of the cue, but I am liking it. He is nice to bridle too *grinz*

This is Chief and Kya.....Chief will be 5 in 2006. He came in for training last summer and I just had to have him for my own. Isn't he the most uniquely colored critter you have ever seen ? I call him a wannabe Paintaloosa. Hee Hee. Kya is my newest "lesson girl" she started in November of 2005 on Dee, but since his loss on December 1st Kya is now learning on a green broke horse. She is a real trooper and I think she will fit right in at Believe in Dreams Ranch.
